Guide: Shopping Boosters

With the Christmas just around the corner, it is a great time for me to explain how Shopping Boosters work.

It is actually a very simple concept. When you use Moola.com's link to visit a retailers site, the retailer will credit Moola for referring you to them. Moola will then get a referral bonus for your purchase or for you completing an offer. Depending on the booster that you decide to do, Moola.com will be paid either a percentage of your purchase or a flat fee. In return for you using Moola's link, Moola will take a part of their referral bonus and pass it on to you as a booster.

Feel free to read more as I cover the benefits of using shopping boosters as well as a few commonly asked questions.

To tell you the truth, I currently do not see any downfalls to using the shopping boosters. In my opinion, the following are the benefits of using a Moola.com Shopping Booster:

  1. You get a discount off a purchase you were planning on making anyways.

  2. If the retailer has a promotion, you can stack this booster on top of that promotion

  3. Instead of getting a flat amount of money back, you can actually take your booster and grow it via Moola.com

  4. The booster will BOOST you up the tower so that you can make money faster.
  5. You help Moola.com make money so that they can make their site even better
I personally did two shopping boosters (so far) one was a PriceLine booster ($11.20 back) and the other was a Newegg booster ($4.34 back). It may not seem like a lot of money, but it adds up.

My Newegg purchase was a really great deal, I got 20% back via Paypal (Cyber Monday Deal) plus the $4.34 back from Moola (which is now pending). This means that I would get my camera for about $254 when it is usually about $309 retail. A savings of about $55... sadly though, this is $55 which I won't be keeping in my wallet since I still have a lot of Christmas shopping left.

There a few common questions that I see around the forums, so I will do my best to answer some of them.

When will my booster show up on my "Pending" boosters list?
It depends on the merchant. Boosters will go pending as soon as Moola.com gets notified of your purchase. Some merchants only notify Moola on a weekly basis, while other will notify Moola within 24 hours.

I made my purchase, why haven't I received my Booster?
It will take at least a 3 weeks for you to get credited with a booster, sometimes longer.

Why don't I receive the Boosters right after I make the purchase?
Moola.com does not give you your boosters right away because most retailers have a return policy and it would not make good business sense to give away money before the money is safely in the merchants pockets. Besides, Moola.com probably has to wait until they get paid for the referral before they can give their members the boosters.

Is each booster offer only allowed to be completed once?
It depends on the booster. If it is a cash back booster (where you get a percentage back from your purchase) then you can use the booster multiple times. If it is a referral bonus (set booster amount) then you can only use it once. I suggest asking the question in the forums if you are not sure.

I know... I know... this has nothing to do with Moola, but I thought it was an interesting question. I mean, Dumbo tells us that elephants are scared of mice, but are they really scared of something that tiny?

Well, follow the link to find the answer.

Moola.com @ TechCrunch Meetup

Last week was the big TechCrunch Meetup and Moola.com was there to announce their next phase of the beta test. Over 800 people attended this meetup in Boston and overall it seemed like a success. I personally watched part of the Moola.com meet up via a live feed that Moola had setup.

During the event Moola conducted one game for $5,242.90 in which a current member (Greedy) played against a random person from the audience (Ross from Boston). Sadly for Greedy, he lost the game and the random opponent was able to walk away with free money.

I have never been able to place faces to some of the names until this event. I took a few screenshots that you may or may not be interested in:

NeedLotsOfMoola (NLOM), one of the Moderators on the Moola.com forums.

Aric, another moderator on the forums.

Arlen Ritchie a.k.a. Archie (Founder/CEO) (thanks Chasby for the pic)

Greedy, a member of Moola.com who was selected to compete against a random guest at the event:

After Greedy (in Black) lost the game to Ross (In White):

Internal Lawsuit

I found out that VentureBeat.com wrote an article about Moola yesterday (and Moola Addict was linked in that article, yippppeee!). The article mentions that the "company is a little rocky right now, suffering from a nasty lawsuit between the co-founders".

Unfortunately, we’ve just learned there’s a nasty law suit going on between Moola’s founders. Founder Jason White is being paid not to come to work, while the lawyers fight it out.
I posted this information on the forum today, but the mods took it down because they did not want it publicized on the forums, so on my blog it goes.

Update: Message from Grant (one of the main admins of the site about this topic "the "lawsuit" has been over for almost a year, it's actually quite old news -- and you can judge for yourself from Moola's growth what happens in this situation. Even though legal issues are not so unusual (given that every company deals with legal issues all the time), I can understand why people might be curious about the situation last year. So, for anyone who's curious, after the launch activities, Admin will prepare an update about what happened in 2006..."

Out of [private] Beta

I thought that Moola changing the front page and adding a booster bar was surprising, but boy was I wrong. What is even more surprising is that Moola is coming out of beta!

Toronto, Canada-based Moola has been operating an invite-only beta for a little over 18 months and will on Friday open their site to the public (they'll be officially launching at the TechCrunch Meetup in Boston).
Congratulations to everyone involved in the process.

As for new games, this excerpt from the article sounds very exciting:
Moola is in the planning stages of an API that would allow third-party developers to add games to Moola. They're currently in talks with two unnamed developers to create additional content prior to the release of a public API. (And they are soliciting queries from other interested game developers at gamedev@moola.com.)

Moola developers would be able to make money from both the advertising on the games, as well as take a cut of the money that changes hands between players. Ritchie also told me that the plan is to allow developers to "Moola-ize" their games outside of the site. So, for example, Microsoft could add Moola functionality to Halo 3 on XBox Live and then Moola members could organize Halo matches and play each other for cash.

Moola Update Nov. 16th

Surprise surprise, Moola.com got an update today. The first obvious update is the front page. The new front page now sports:

- a live update of how much money has exchanged hands
- a link to the Moola.com tutorial
- a live update of recent cash outs
- a link to member submitted video

The second addition that I found is the BoosterBar (found in the booster zone section). I have no idea how it works since I have not installed it, but to my knowledge:

- It detects when you are on a site that supports boosters

Leaderboard Nov. 13th

The new leader board is out! For some reason I keep missing it, and once again I am a few days late posting this. Great news though! (for me at least). I made it on the board. I am number 87!

Let me remind you, some of the decreases in the balance is due to cashing out:

Improve Your Game

When I first started playing Moola, I used a pen and paper to track what cards were left in Hi/Lo or what Nuggets has been thrown in Gold Rush. After a couple of days, I realized that it is really a big waste of paper. Thus, my search began for a more efficient way of doing this task. After trying different sites, I finally found a few that I liked. Sure some people may consider it method of cheating, but there are two reasons why this it isn't.

1. Moola has no problem with us tracking these things
2. All these sites are doing is allowing players to make an informed decision.

So if it is not banned, why not use the tools out there. Below are a two sites I would recommend to any Moola.com player.

Note: I am in no way affiliated with any of the sites mentioned below, except for the fact that I use to use them to improve my odds

MoolaHelper.com: This is my personal favorite. Instead of having to switch between windows to update your tracker, this site puts a div overlay (a box) over the Moola.com site. It is a very simple tracker and does not have the spiffy graphics. This site has a tracker for both Hi/Lo and Gold Rush. I used this for a month or so with no problems. Below is an image of what you will see if you were playing with MoolaHelper.com

CrashMyCubical.com: This site uses flash to do all the tracking for you. If you have two or more monitors while playing Moola, this site is great. It is a lot fancier compared to Moolahelper.com, but works just as well. Below are the Gold Rush Cheat and Hi/Lo Card Counter tools available at CrashMyCubicle.com

Bottle Caps: For those of you who do not trust other sites to do your dirty work. Someone on the forums once suggested using bottle caps when playing Gold Rush. You would need to mark each cap with a value for each nugget that your opponent, the mine and you have. Then each time a nugget is used, you can just push the bottle cap aside. Of course, you do not have to use a bottle cap. If you have 18 buttons, paperclips, rocks, or thing-ama-bobs, this method will work with them too.

Hope you found this somewhat usual. Now go out there and play!

Post Booster Blitz

It's all over. The Booster Blitz has ended. Now that I have experienced it first hand I can tell you, the best thing about the event is the fact that everyone is on playing. I was playing Gold Rush most of the time and it was such a great experience being able to challenge different people on the higher levels. I think the highest number of people I saw playing was about 2300. Pretty amazing when you compare it to the average of 400-600 during a normal day.

The booster spins are great and all, but I was disappointed in the amount of spins I got. But at the end of the day, it is bonus money, so I shouldn't complain. During the Blitz, I received a total of 41 spins totaling $7.50 (highest spin being $1). I was really hoping to hit a $5 spin or even better a $9 spin but no luck. I wonder if anybody got it?

I played for about 4 of the 6 hrs of the Booster Blitz (mostly because it started at 3pm over on the west coast and I was still at work). I played a total of 81 games (70 GR and 11 Hi/Lo). I actually played more games then I had expected. I won 40 of those games, tied on 12 of them and lost 29 games.

(Win Loss Chart Goes Here)

As for my account balance. I jumped from $70.65 at the beginning of the day and I ended the day with $104.84. My balance peaked at $113.75 during the blitz, but I went on a 5 game losing streak. Although $35 may not seem like much for some people. My balance actually increased by about 30%.

(Days Balance Graph Goes Here)

I am just happy that I finally passed the $100 mark. I hope to make another $50 in the next few days so that I can cash out soon.

How did you guys do? Good/Bad? If this was your first Blitz, did it meet your expectations?

Month Report: October

Wow, October was a crazy month for me. After my balance decided to go skydiving, I slowed down in the amount I was playing. All is good though because I finally reached my newest peak and I am still climbing!

I started the month not playing to many games and when I did play, I played Hi/Lo. Why? because I was busy at work, still in shock from the big loss and was preparing for my trip to Hawaii. Oh yes, the beautiful island of Oahu! I wasn't particularly content with how I was doing, but that was okay because I wasn't losing money.

For the first time I received my shopping boosters. A total of $12 was added to my balance while I was gone ($11.20 from the tickets to Hawaii, $.80 from GuessNow.com booster). My gosh, believe me, it is a really good feeling to see your balance jump 50% in one day. I thought that was the last time I would see this spike in a while, boy was I wrong.

Things really picked up when I got back home. I decided to try a strategy I read about. It worked (with a few customizations). I was playing Gold Rush again and I had a betting strategy to follow (strategy to be posted soon). Each day ended with a nice gain. Everything was going my way.

Lately however, it seems like I just can't seem to win as many games in Gold Rush. It is so frustrating to start the day below your previous days balance. My only solution for this problem so far is to just hop on over to Hi/Lo for a couple of games.

September Consisted Of:
107 Games of Hi/Lo (51 Wins, 13 Tied, 43 Losses)
207 Games of Gold Rush (112 Wins, 9 Tied, 85 Losses)
60 Search & Win Spins
2 Shopping Boosters ($12 Total)

At least I am on track with having more wins then losses.

Lessons Learned:
1. Slow And Steady Increases Your Balance
2. Sometimes you need a change of game (especially when you keep losing to anonymous players)
3. A tan makes you look SEXY!!!

Booster Blitz

Moola has just announced that there will be a Booster & Invite Blitz this Nov. 6th from 6pm EDT to midnight (of for those of you on the west coast like me, 3pm - 9pm PST). Like many of you, I have never experienced a booster blitz and I actually have no clue what it is. So I did a little research and I am going to share with you what I have learned.

What is a Invite Blitz?
This is the first year that Moola.com will be conducting this prize. Basically every new member that joins during the 6 hour period will not start off with just one penny, but instead they will have enough money to play on level 6 on the tower.

What is a Booster Blitz?
A Booster Blitz is an event on Moola.com where a sponsor will basically give away free money during a given time period?

How are the boosters given out?
The boosters will be given out in $2, $5, and $9 increments after some of the games you play during the Booster Blitz.

Edit: I was just informed that there are also $.25, $.50 and %.75 increments in previous Booster Blitz. So it is very likely that it will be in this coming blitz as well.

How much can I win?
This will depend on how many games you can squeeze in during the Booster Blitz as well as how lucky you are. Just for fun, let's run some conservative numbers.

Assuming it takes you 5 min to play each game and you get on average a $2 booster every 3 games. You can potentially make $48. Not a bad increase if you have a small balance.

Am I considered for a Booster after each game?
Yes, Whether you get one or not is a totally different question.

Will everyone be guaranteed a booster?
No, but there is a good chance you will get one.

How many Blitz Boosters Will Be Given Out?
As the moderator Archie mentioned "The actual number of blitz booster's given away is determined by many factors, including the number of participants. If there's a lot more traffic than expected, I think the budget will be more than expected too."
